The late artist Mustafa Al-Shater, one of the founders of the Aznzarne Group, was buried yesterday, Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in the city of Inzegane, on the outskirts of Agadir. The late artist passed away on the morning of the same day after a long artistic career that started with the Laqdam group and other musical groups, then the Aznzaran group. He was one of the most prominent players of the Kabir on the santur and had a melodious voice. The late artist suffered from heart disease for years and was confined to bed until his death.

The Nigerian film industry has lost another of its veteran performers, Columbus Irisoanga, fondly known as ‘Igbudu’ following his unforgettable role in the 2001 Nollywood classic Isakaba. His passing was announced by actress and politician Hilda Dokubo, who expressed her deep sorrow over his death in an emotional Instagram post. “Our uncle Coli @colu_mbusirisoanga has gone to be with the Lord. Ikoli eh dein na mu. There can’t be a shortage of Angels in heaven that the few here are called home like this na! This one is heavy on Uniport, Rivers State, Nollywood,” Dokubo wrote. Irisoanga’s death is a significant loss not just for Nollywood but also for the academic community. He was a respected senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees. Over the years, he nurtured and mentored many students who have gone on to become industry professionals.

The disc jockey (DJ) space has in the past been dominated by males, but more women have broken the glass ceiling and made their mark in this arena. Female DJs often struggle with recognition and inclusion over their male counterparts. However, with the constant rise of female DJs, some significant changes have taken place where the women even invest on their crafts and study the art of DJ-ing. “There is substantial growth on this space for women, and maybe 30% of women DJs nowadays enjoy to be behind the decks, but there is still more males doing it,” acknowledged YDJ Academy director Leatile ‘Ydj’ Rapoo. Rapoo, an experienced DJ and music producer, whose career has spanned over 20 years, said they had received a lot of female students who were currently doing well in the industry. Compared to the past years, Rapoo said the female turnover at his academy is high. "We give lessons to everyone, and we give everyone a chance and support them equally regardless of gender,” he added.
