Gospel music saw a surge in popularity last year, with new artistes bringing fresh perspectives to the genre. Among my latest discoveries is Sylvie Simbi, a talented singer-songwriter crafting her sound from Italy while hoping to connect with listeners in Kigali—and, if all goes well, bring her music to a live audience there. The New Times caught up with her to learn more about her journey and vision. Excerpts: Can you tell us about yourself? Where were you born? What led you to gospel music? I’m Sylvie Simbi, a singer and songwriter born and raised in Rome, Italy, to Rwandan parents. Music has always been a part of me—whether singing in church, at school or listening to records at home. It’s been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I truly believe it was my calling. In 2011, I had the incredible opportunity to feature in an Italian song that topped the pop charts, followed by a tour where I experienced the thrill of performing before massive crowds.
Nollywood veteran Segun Arinze has revealed the reasons behind his departure from the music industry, emphasizing that it was not a result of failure but rather a conscious decision to dedicate himself to his acting career. During an appearance on the show ‘Curiosity Made Me Ask,’ hosted by content creator Bae U Barbie, Arinze provided an overview of his professional journey. “I didn’t fail as a musical artist. I left music on my own volition. If I wanted to do music, I would have continued,” he explained. “I read theatre art at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife. After school, I ventured into music on my own terms. When I decided to concentrate on my acting career, I gave it my all.” Arinze, who produced two albums while active in the music industry, expressed intentions to return to music.
Social media was once hailed as the ultimate game-changer in communication, opening up a world where everyone could speak, share, and be heard. Platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram became virtual megaphones for human rights, freedom of speech, and social causes. Well, in Ghana, that utopia has taken a nosedive into dystopia faster than you can say "tweet and delete." What was meant to give voice to the voiceless has turned into a weapon of mass destruction for celebrities' reputations. Ghana's glitterati now find themselves tap dancing through a minefield of fan expectations, political pressures, and vicious backlash from every Tom, Dick, and Hashtag.
Ghanaian musician Krymi has voiced his displeasure with the behavior of certain individuals who described themselves as "gatekeepers" in the creative arts industry. In an interview with Onua FM, Krymi emphasised that the creative arts industry is meant for talents, not for individuals who seek to control it. According to Krymi, these 'gatekeepers', who have been bestowed with certain powers, act as though they have the authority to determine the fate of an artiste. "I don't like people who are called gatekeepers because the industry is not for them. The industry is for the musicians, so do not gatekeep a talent you didn't give. “The only person who can gatekeep the industry is God. But unfortunately, there is a system and these people are there, hence you need to find a way to navigate the system," he said.
When many hear the name Margaret Nasha, the first person that comes to their mind is one of the women who made a mark in Botswana's political arena who was also at one point the Speaker of the National Assembly. Her namesake, 18-year old Margaret Nasha, also from Otse, proved to have what it takes to win the Miss Teen Botswana crown. The young Nasha's victory was influenced by her brilliance, passion and confidence. She indeed had a good fight towards winning the crown among other equally beautiful and talented competitors. Her project, 'Kagiso Lapeng' aiming to combat gender-based violence (GBV) has come at the right time where GBV has become a great concern in the country with high cases of intimate partners brutally killing each other.
