Court issues new verdict in Amr Diab slapping case

An Egyptian appeals court has decided to reserve its verdict in the case of singer Amr Diab being accused of slapping a young man at a concert. The court has set February 26 as the date for announcing its decision. A misdemeanor court previously fined Diab LE200 (approximately four US dollars) and ordered him to pay LE10,000 in compensation for assaulting the victim, Saad Osama, at a wedding Diab was performing at. During Wednesday’s hearing, Diab’s lawyer argued for his acquittal, claiming that his actions were in self-defense and did not exceed the necessary boundaries. The defense cited articles in the penal code that permit the use of force to repel a physical assault.

Master H leads 23rd NAMA nominees

Organisers of the country’s premier arts merit awards, dubbed National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), yesterday released nominees for this year’s edition ahead of the show next month. Scheduled to take place on March 1 at the Harare Hippodrome, the glitz and glam event will be hosted by television personality Nabeelah Jogee and Charlene Mangweni-Furusa. Jogee will host the main stage, while Mangweni-Furusa will provide the voice-over. In the music category, Master H, real name Hillary Marufu, leads with two nominations: Outstanding Male Musician and People’s Choice Award. There is also stiff competition in the visual arts category and another fierce category of interest is Outstanding Exhibition. Commenting on this year’s nominees, the organisers said they looked at works submitted between December 1, 2023, and November 30, 2024.

During a recent conversation with Influencer Danilo Castro, musician Preto Show revealed that if a person is not materialistic, the others they work with do not understand their responsibilities, as they have no idea how money is made. The artist took the opportunity to state that those who do not fight to have money end up using the term materialist for those who really know how to do it. “Where I put my money there are rules, whether you want to comply or not, the door is open, I continue to thank God, my money will be intact, I have that taste and affection for them, but at the end of it all it is business, I think people have no idea how to make money and how to fight to have money”, he said. When asked about his current view of the awards he did not receive, the singer responded that he did not deserve any awards based on his position.

‘The future belongs to women’: Senegalese director Moussa Sene Absa at Luxor African Film Festival

The 14th edition of the Luxor African Film Festival (9-14 January) honoured the Senegalese director Moussa Sene Absa, known as the father of suburban cinema. We talk to Sene Absa about his career and inspirations. Born in 1958 in the working-class neighbourhood of Tableau Ferraille, near the Senegalese capital Dakar, Moussa Sene Absa was introduced to Indian cinema by his friends at a very young age. He moved to France in the early 1980s, where he immersed himself in the artistic scene, exploring theatre, embarking on acting and taking screenplay writing courses at the University of Paris.
