Popular Ghanaian actress Beverly Afaglo has shed light on the challenges she and many other artistes faced during her early years in the film industry. Speaking in an interview on Joy Learning TV, the accomplished actress and entrepreneur revealed that producers practiced discrimination by casting light-skinned actors over darker actresses for major roles in movies. Afaglo explained this industry preference stemmed from the widespread belief that lighter complexions appeared more appealing on camera. "Our time, what most of the producers were doing was, you have to be a half-cast. I think Jackie Appiah was the only person because she was a star already so they needed her. "Producers thought light-skinned actors looked better on TV. As a result, most of them preferred casting light-skinned individuals,” she said. The actress described the intense pressure actors faced during auditions, where one mistake could cost them rare opportunities.
“At Vwaza, we want to move away from the subscription-based model that most streaming services use. We understand that people no longer want to keep paying monthly for music. We are bringing back the concept of music ownership, allowing fans to buy the music and own it forever, just like they did with CDs in the past,” he said. Fickson also said 80 percent of the earnings from music sales go directly to artists who are provided with real-time insights into their streams and earnings, allowing them to track their success and manage their finances effectively. He said: “Vwaza will offer better payouts with higher revenue splits and direct artist payments to ensure that musicians earn more and faster. They do not have to wait to reach a certain number of streams. “With the iOS version, we ensure that no one is left out. We put Malawian music in the hands of more people, creating opportunities for both artists and fans.”

Paddyman Kayiwa is a church boy who chanced on sharing space in a production studio with Elly Wamala. That moment was later the anchor for his career and he has gone on to produce some of the songs on Uganda’s hit list in the last two decades. At the height of the musical beef between Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine, each of them trusted him to produce their next hits, a kind of competition he says was healthy because the audience got good music while the artistes developed themselves.

The disc jockey (DJ) space has in the past been dominated by males, but more women have broken the glass ceiling and made their mark in this arena. Female DJs often struggle with recognition and inclusion over their male counterparts. However, with the constant rise of female DJs, some significant changes have taken place where the women even invest on their crafts and study the art of DJ-ing. “There is substantial growth on this space for women, and maybe 30% of women DJs nowadays enjoy to be behind the decks, but there is still more males doing it,” acknowledged YDJ Academy director Leatile ‘Ydj’ Rapoo. Rapoo, an experienced DJ and music producer, whose career has spanned over 20 years, said they had received a lot of female students who were currently doing well in the industry. Compared to the past years, Rapoo said the female turnover at his academy is high. "We give lessons to everyone, and we give everyone a chance and support them equally regardless of gender,” he added.
