Tanzanian TikTok sensation Fanuel John Masamaki, popularly known as Zerobrainer0, has been named among TikTok's top content creators to watch in 2025, joining an exclusive list of digital stars from Sub-Saharan Africa. With an impressive 12 million followers, Zerobrainer0 earned a spot in the Innovators category, which recognises content creators who push creative boundaries and bring fresh, bold perspectives to their craft. Known for his hilarious take on football content, Zerobrainer0 has won the hearts of many by blending sports analysis with comedy.
Former Isibaya actress Ayanda Borotho closed off 2024 on a very sombre note. She announced the death of her twin brother, Sandile "Hammer" Ngubane, who was 43 years old. On their shared birthday, 13 January 2025, Ayanda Borotho said she decided not to celebrate it. However, Borotho said she slept the entire day. She posted an Instagram video, taking it back to his younger days leading up to his passing.
After an extended break from the urban music scene, hip-hop artists Diktator and Isu have made a comeback with a new remix of IKK’s track “Ndabweranso,” which also features artists such as Hyphen, BeeJay, Daredevilz, Blak Jak, Barry One, Base Cube and Mafo. One of the most colourful and interesting periods in ancient West African history is set to be relived in an epic musical theatre production titled “Mansa Musa and the Trail of Lost Gold, The Prelude”. This spectacular 150-cast and crew African production created by Ghanaian theatre maestro Chief Moomen will premiere at the National Theatre of Ghana on Friday 24th January 2025 at 7:30 pm; the first in a series of world premieres across Africa, Europe, America, The Middle East and Asia. “Mansa Musa and the Trail of Lost Gold, The Prelude” is a unique African musical theatre production where a group of young heroes and heroines embark on a fascinating adventure back in time to discover the lost gold of Mansa Musa, an ancient West African ruler of the Mali Empire said to be, possibly, the richest man to have ever lived.
Renowned actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has addressed recent calls from stakeholders in the creative sector advocating for industry players to be appointed as Ministers of Tourism, Arts, and Culture. Dumelo contends that such positions should not be reserved exclusively for creatives. In a conversation with Graphic Showbiz, Dumelo emphasized that the role requires visionary leadership dedicated to advancing the welfare of the sector, regardless of the individual's background. He stated, "What is more important is to be visionary and seek the welfare of the players you represent at the ministry. Who can best represent the ideals and goals, and equally understand the policies of the sector? That’s what is important to me and not whether the person is a Creative or not."
Ghanaian artiste, Lord Morrgan, has granted the wish of a fan who needed a motorbike during Afienya Fest 2024. Afienya Fest, hosted by the Afienya Development Committee, brought together thousands of music lovers to celebrate local culture and music on 28th December 2024. During his performance, Lord noticed one particular fan by name Wale in the crowd shouting his name with unwavering enthusiasm. Seeing the fan’s excitement, the artiste invited him on stage and asked, “What would you like as a gift from me, Lord Morrgan?” Without hesitation, the fan replied, “A motorbike!” Looking the fan in the eye, he promised, “Before the end of January, I will get you a brand-new motorbike.”
Trust Khosa Organisers of the 2025 Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon have described this year’s edition as a resounding success. The event, which took place at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton last Sunday, turned out to be a celebration of music, aerobics, and athletics. It was spiced up by a health expo, where the focus was mainly on diabetes awareness. The event was held in memory of the late crooner Tuku, who died at the age of 66 on January 23, 2019. He was declared a national hero and was buried at his Madziwa homestead in Mashonaland Central Province. A series of festivities to mark his legacy usually takes place in January, with the marathon race being one of the events. Marathon director Sylvia Sanyanga, who had a busy day in the office last Sunday, said they surpassed last year’s number of runners. Last year they recorded 500 runners.
DJ Maphorisa is one of the biggest artists in South Africa from where the pulsating Amapiano genre started before spreading globally. In a recent interview with BBC, the award-winning hitmaker shared the story of how he got influenced to start making Amapiano. According to Maphorisa, Nigerian superstar Wizkid played a notable role in his journey to becoming one of the driving forces of Amapiano. The South African revealed that he was hanging out with Wizkid in a club in Pretoria where one of the DJs played an Amapiano record that instantly caught Wizkid's attention who asked him about the sound. Maphorisa shared that before that Amapiano was already bubbling in South Africa's underground scene but he never paid attention to it until the sound piqued Wizkid's curiosity. "I thought if Wizkid really vibe with this sound then there's something. So he's the one who really put me on the sound," Maphorisa told BBC.
