New Year, New Stories: these are the Nollywood trends we hope to see in 2025. The new year is here, and with it comes an opportunity for Nollywood to level up in storytelling, production, and representation. Over the past few years, the industry has taken huge strides; breaking into international markets, winning accolades, and telling stories that resonate globally. However, there’s room to grow! As we enter 2025, here are some trends we hope to see Nollywood embrace to keep its momentum going while captivating audiences at home and abroad. 1. More Diverse and Relatable Characters One thing Nollywood excels at is creating characters that stick with you, but let’s take it a step further. This year, we’re rooting for stories featuring a broader range of characters, people from different socio-economic classes, regions, and walks of life.
In a heart-wrenching final scene, Wela’a sat in a quiet corner, his gaze lost in the distance as if Moftah was still there. A faint smile crossed his lips, a single tear glistening in his eye—words unspoken, yet deeply felt. The story ended, but the chapter remained open. Some goodbyes don’t fade memories; they ignite them, burning forever in our hearts. It was as if Wela’a was bringing his friend back to life with his words—because those we lose may vanish from sight, but they never truly leave our souls. The gripping final episode of Welad El Shams, starring Ahmed Malek and Taha Desouky delivers an emotional gut punch to viewers.

And if I say that Séketxe are on another level, you'll say I'm lying. But I'm here to say it: this group brings harmony to their compositions, not only to portray reality, but to create harmony between what they sing and what they live. That's Rap Cia! “Gualembe” is the new song that mixes what is ours with modernism and a fusion between trap and Afro, of course with the group's usual beautiful rap. It brings the cry of someone who comes from the ghetto and shines in the city, that is, in the capital. I can say: today, there is no group or rapper that can compete with Séketxe. Yes, they bring something unique. Angolan rap is in full swing, and “Gualembe” is proof of what has been said about the group. After a season dedicated to solo projects — such as “Mete Dica” by 12 Furos and “Canto de Glória” by BadBanzelo, in addition to other works that gave voice to the members’ individual careers — they return with full force.

The recently announced Artweb Power 100 Zimbabwe list of visual artists and creative hubs may spark debate, even though most names on the list exceeded expectations last year. In the past two decades, Zimbabwe has also proven to be a fertile ground for visual artists who have made a significant impact and captured the attention of the Artweb Power 100 Zimbabwe. According to the report, the Artweb Power 100 Zimbabwe is an annual list that celebrates individuals and institutions shaping the Zimbabwean art landscape. The selection also serves as an exploration of how art manifests in one space and imagines its resonance in others— a structural portrait of the connections and forces that bring art to life.
