Maria Hofstätter began performing on stage at the age of 19 and developed her acting career through theatre, cabaret and cinema. Rather than following a conventional path through drama school, she built her experience through practical work and gradually became one of Austria's most distinctive character actresses.
Her breakthrough came with Dog Days (Hundstage, 2001), directed by Ulrich Seidl, in which she played Anna, an outspoken hitchhiker. She later appeared in Paradise: Faith (2012), playing Anna Maria, a deeply religious woman whose beliefs shape her relationships and everyday life.
Her other notable credits include Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005), Import/Export (2007), Fox in a Hole (2020), The Devil's Bath (2024) and Welcome Home Baby (2025). Her performances have earned her several awards, including the Austrian Film Award and the German Actor Award.
