Gray Hofmeyr, born February 6, 1949, is an iconic South African film and television director, screenwriter, and producer. After training with the BBC in the 1970s, he returned home to become a foundational pioneer during the early days of South African broadcasting. He is best known for creating the legendary, multilingual daily soap opera Isidingo, which revolutionized local television by authentically depicting a diverse, multicultural society. He also cemented his status as a box-office powerhouse through his long-standing partnership with comedian Leon Schuster, directing and co-writing record-breaking blockbuster comedies like Mr. Bones and There's a Zulu on My Stoep. Often credited under his Afrikaans nickname Grys, Hofmeyr's immense commercial success and creative impact have earned him more local industry awards than almost any other director in the country.
