In Nollywood, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: not all filmmakers and actors are treated equally. They are tagged as YouTube filmmakers, Netflix stars, or Amazon actors. Her fiery post shed light on an issue that has long simmered beneath the surface but rarely gets addressed with such candour. Afegbai’s grievance stems from a disturbing trend where the industry; and the viewers themselves segregate filmmakers and actors based on where their work is showcased. According to her, this classification unfairly creates a hierarchy, diminishing the talents of those who work primarily on platforms like YouTube while elevating others associated with global giants like Netflix or Amazon. “Normally, an actor is an actor. It’s about, are you a good actor? Can you act? But it’s you viewers that have turned the whole thing upside down,” she said.
Daniel Omara is one comedian whose jokes can only be understood by a few people. While some do not find his jokes funny, many appreciate his sense of humour. While being hosted on the Basement podcast, the comedian revealed that once he goes abroad, he can never marry a Black woman. Well as this statement might seem sensitive, he explained that it does not make sense in anyway. “If I went abroad, there is no way I am marrying a Black woman. It does not make sense travelling that far and ending up with the same colour. It is like a Muzungu coming from the US, ends up in Uganda and marries another Muzungu I will be like, Why… because you are surrounded by Blacks. Diversify.” Again, maybe this was one of those jokes of his where you have to overthink if he was serious or just dropping gags.
