Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, professionally known as Mayorkun, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, pianist, and dancer born on 23 March 1994 in Lagos, Nigeria. Recognized for his energetic Afro-pop sound and hit records, he rose to prominence after posting a cover of Davido's song "The Money" on social media. The performance caught Davido's attention, leading to a record deal with Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in 2016.
Mayorkun is the eldest of three children and was raised in Lagos in a Christian family. Before pursuing music full time, he worked in the banking sector but left his job in search of better opportunities. Around the same time he submitted his resignation, Davido contacted him after discovering his music online. Following the call, Mayorkun shared several original recordings, which ultimately earned him a contract with DMW.
His debut single, "Eleko," was released in 2016 and quickly became a breakthrough success. The song entered the Nigerian music charts, climbed into the top five, and its music video surpassed one million views within just ten days. He continued building his reputation with successful singles such as "Yawa," "Sade," "Mama," and "Che Che."
In 2018, Mayorkun released his debut studio album, The Mayor of Lagos, following the release of promotional singles including "Posh" and "Fantasy" featuring Olu Maintain. The album received positive reviews and reached No. 15 on the Billboard World Albums chart, further expanding his international recognition.
